Project Coordinator – GrowAbility Club
Saffron Walden Mencap Society is seeking an organised and observant Project
Coordinator to ensure members of our thriving ‘GrowAbility’ allotment project are
supported to engage with nature safely and meaningfully.
The Role
As the Project Coordinator, you will be responsible for the welfare and support of
members at our weekly sessions. While a Sessional Allotment Leader provides
horticultural expertise, you will act as the 'bridge', ensuring members understand tasks
and feel confident in the outdoor environment, handling the associated safety and
logistical operations.
Key Details
● Pay: £15.50 per hour.
● Location: Dig It Community Allotment, Saffron Walden.
● Hours: Weekly sessions on Wednesday mornings, 9:45 am – 1:15 pm.
● Requirements: Experience in supporting people with learning disabilities and/or
autism is essential. You must also be comfortable working outdoors in all weather
conditions.
● While horticultural experience is desirable, it is not essential; this is first and
foremost a supporting role focused on the wellbeing and engagement of our
members.
Key Responsibilities
● Member Wellbeing: Maintaining a constant overview of members’ engagement
and comfort during outdoor tasks.
● Safety and Risk: Conducting 'dynamic'; site risk assessments and ensuring all
service users’ individual risk assessments are up to date.
● Safeguarding: Acting as the primary on-site point of contact for safeguarding and
member dignity.
● Logistics: Managing attendance registers and coordinating volunteer support.
About You
You are a proactive individual with strong digital literacy skills and a passion for inclusive
support. You have the ability to 'translate'; instructions into accessible tasks alongside a
genuine interest in the therapeutic benefits of the outdoors.

Deputy Club Leader – Side by Side Club
Saffron Walden Mencap Society is strengthening the leadership team of our popular
‘Side by Side’ social club. This long-standing group is a favourite for our members, and
we are looking for a reliable individual to work alongside our Club Leader to maintain the
high-quality experience and energy our members love.
The Role
As the Deputy Club Leader, you will be the 'second-in-command'; helping to facilitate a
stimulating environment where members (aged 18+) can socialise and thrive. You will
play a vital role in the weekly management of the session, ensuring it remains an
inclusive and welcoming space for all.
Key Details
● Pay: £14.50 per hour.
● Location: Salvation Army Hall, Saffron Walden.
● Hours: Weekly sessions on Wednesday evenings, 6:15 pm – 8:45 pm.
● Requirements: Experience in supporting people with learning disabilities and/or
autism, coupled with the confidence to lead a team and manage sessions
independently when required.
Key Responsibilities
● Deputising: Taking full responsibility for the session and managing the team in the
Club Leader’s absence.
● Activity Support: Assisting in the delivery of a social programme that meets the
varying needs of our members.
● Compliance: Ensuring all statutory requirements and Society policies are met
during every session.
● Partnership: Building supportive relationships with members, families, and carers.
About You
You are a confident and empathetic communicator with a passion for inclusive support.
You are a reliable individual who is ready to take on leadership responsibilities at short
notice and has the ability to build strong, supportive relationships with our members and
their families.

Side by Side Club Volunteer
Saffron Walden Mencap Society is dedicated to improving the lives of local adults with learning disabilities by offering fun, friendship, and inclusion at a variety of clubs, events and outings. Our Side by Side volunteers will be able to commit to attending a weekly social club held at the Salvation Army Hall in Saffron Walden every Wednesday from 6:30pm to 8:30pm.
Every week is different at the club but it is always fun! Working with the club leader and deputy, you might be helping a member to spot numbers on a bingo card one week, helping to serve drinks in the break, or having fun with your team the next week during a game of ‘play your cards right’.
As a charity dedicated to equality, diversity and inclusion, age, lack of formal qualifications or disabilities will not exclude anyone from suitability for this volunteering role. No previous experience in the field is required - but you must be willing to learn and complete our induction process (with support if required).
All volunteers must have an enhanced DBS certificate which will be organised by our charity at no cost to you.

Side by Side Club Volunteer Driver
Saffron Walden Mencap Society is dedicated to improving the lives of local adults with learning disabilities by offering fun, friendship, and inclusion at a variety of clubs, events and outings. Our Side by Side volunteer drivers will be able to commit to driving our members to and from a weekly social club held at the Salvation Army Hall in Saffron Walden every Wednesday from 6:30pm to 8:30pm.
You will be driving the same individual (s) every week following our Transport Policy guidelines and will be given sufficient information in order to fulfil the role. We offer reimbursement for mileage to all of our drivers, claimed on a monthly basis.
You will need to have a current full UK drivers licence, and be fully insured to drive your own vehicle which will be safe and roadworthy. No previous experience in the field is required - but you must be willing to learn and to complete our induction process (with support if required).
All of our volunteers must have an enhanced DBS certificate which will be organised by our charity at no cost to you.
