GrowAbility Blog: Wednesday 23rd October 2024

Late autumn sunshine, scarecrows and our new path!

We’ve had a busy few weeks on the plot. There is always lots to do preparing the beds and thinking about what to plant for spring.

Matt composted the last of the pepper plants, Amanda, Charis & Willow planted broad beans and peas which will give us spring harvests, and Barry and Joel did some prepping for the floor to our new wheelchair accessible seating area.

We hope you’ll agree that the new path is looking fabulous and thanks to TKE landscaping we will soon have a fully accessible and safe allotment site with some more fabulous raised beds. The site is actually ’Dig-It’s’ of course, but for a few hours every week we really do feel like it’s ’ours’ and we all love being part of it.

We have had such fun making and naming our scarecrow Flora Daisy who went with her two friends to be displayed at Audley End Railway ready for half term Halloween train rides. Mencap Members can buy discounted tickets for the train - just ask club leaders or contact admin for the code!

On Wednesday, we all looked at a leek flower, which is full of tiny seeds - just one flower would fill several seed packets, we hope to plant these next year. We found other seeds recently, marigolds, lettuce and fennel- we’re amazed at how easy it is to save seeds.

Lastly, there have been cabbages, horseradish, kale and celery to take home - some of it grown by our allotment neighbours, Duncan, who is always so generous with his excess vegetables.

Lots of photos this week - we hope you like them!
